Game Modding Support - 2026

Yuzu Emulator Game Modding Support – 2026

Yuzu enables you to mod your preferred game directly in the emulator. This is because of the modding framework. The mods give you an opportunity to unlock different aspects, like extra FPS for a game. Yuzu Mods becomes easy when you hold a grip and understand its technical processes, and then everything makes sense in no time! Before taking any step, ensure you have a Yuzu in your Windows, Android, and Linux.

How Mods Work in the Yuzu emulator

Mods work by altering the game files, which enables you to change different aspects of games, from gameplay to audio, visual, and performance. Yuzu key mods are supported through the structured directory system, and you can also place the modified files here. You can arrange the mods in folders within the directory structure named with the name of the game the mod is designed for.

When you launch the Yuzu, it reads the modified files and then loads them alongside the original game files. You can enable or disable Yuzu Emulator mods through the mod management interface. It also makes it possible to evaluate the compatibility of multiple games and enables you to switch between multiple mod setups you have for one game.

Mod Directory Structure

Consider an example of a mod in Yuzu.

  • Execs
  • Romfs
  • Romfs–ext

About ExeFS Directory

The ExeFS directory has patches for the game’s executable (s). The files in the ExeFS dir generally alter game behaviour or logic. It supports two types of patches: IPS and IPSwitch.

  • PS Patch: To use it, you need to form a file with NSO build ID as the name and save it with the .ips extension. After this, kindly save it in the ExeFS directory.
  • IPSwitch Patch: Its use is very simple because the file name doesn’t even matter unless you save it with the .pchtxt extension and have the NSO build with it in the file name.

About RomFS

This directory has replacements for the assets and general files of the game. These mods generally change the game’s fonts, textures, sounds, text, and other graphical assets. If the RomFS dir is not empty, Yuzu will merge its contents with the base game with files from this  RomFS dir over the base, and this procedure is called Layered FS.

Note: It is easier to start with the RomFS mod compared to the ExceFS mod.

About RomFS Extention (romfs–ext)

This directory saves the patches and stubs for ROMFS files. It enables you to delete files in this directory if the file shares the same name but the extension is .stub, similarly, the same name if the extension is .ips.

For Example

Let’s consider Splatoon 2, a well-known game for modding. Splatoon 2’s title ID is 01003BC0000A0000, all of the mods will go for this game in %YUZU_DIR%/load/01003BC0000A0000. Suppose we have two mods, Mod X and Mod Y to play with. We will make two directions, and one called “Mod X” and the other “Mod Y”, in the 01003BC0000A0000 folder. There are exefs, romfs, and romfs–ext directories in the “Mod X” folder given by the author. You can omit them if it is empty. Furthermore, if the mod folder is empty, then yuzu cheats will automatically ignore it.

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, the game modding support in Yuzu allows you to improve your gaming experience by unlocking different aspects of the game. The process becomes easy once you understand how mods work and the role of ExeFS, RomFS, and RomFS-ext directories.
